Starting School – Books
In this post from my Starting School series I am looking at some great books to help your pre-schoolers prepare for September.
Freyja and I love reading and looking through books together and talking through stories about children going to school is a great way to help her think about what to expect in a few weeks time. I love “Starting School” by Janet and Allan Ahlberg. It is a classic and covers the first day through to the end of term with lovely pictures providing plenty to talk about. The Usborne First Experiences “Going to School” illustrated by Stephen Cartwright is also great and covers the early morning routine and first day nerves. The text is also simple enough that maybe when Emily starts school her big sister will be able to read it to her and share her experiences of starting school through this book. I also love interactive books such as the “Topsy and Tim Start School Sticker Activity Book” by Jean and Gareth Adamson.
I have also recently discovered some fantastic personalised books to help prepare children for starting school. Firstly there is “The First Day of School” from Born Gifted. This tells the story of bunny’s first day at school. It covers the nerves on the night night before the first day of school and shows that there is nothing to worry about. Bunny ends up having a brilliant first day and can’t wait to go back! Each page is personalised in text and pictures.
Freyja loves looking at this book – especially picking out her name on each of the pages.
Another brilliant personalised book is “From A to Z with Name of Child” from It’s Your Story. This would make a perfect gift for marking a child’s first day of school. This is an alphabet book which stars the child on every page. Each letter is accompanied by a picture and sentence which emphasises the sound of the letter. There is plenty in this book to encourage interaction from your child such as “What are you painting a picture of? How many carriages are on the train? What colour is your yo-yo?”.
Freyja loves this book – the photo which we had to upload when ordering the book has been put into the book really well, and she adores being the “star” of this book.
Finally, there is the “Rant and Rave – My School” book by From You To Me. This is a journal with a twist – a double cover to inspire a child to rave about the good bits of school life and then turn the journal over to rant about the bits they don’t enjoy.
The guided prompts in the book allow the child to rant and rave about friendships, teachers, playground antics and lots more. There are illustrations with lists and spaces to draw in.
Obviously Freyja is a little young to be able to fill this in by herself, but I love the idea of this being a way of talking through her days at school and reflecting on what went well and what went less well. Encouraging Freyja to evaluate her learning through a journal such as this will help get her into good habits as she continues through her school life. It’s also good to see that she has embraced the idea behind this journal too:
Disclaimer: We were sent “The First Day of School”, “From A to Z with Name of Child” and “Rant and Rave – My School” for review, but as always all opinions are my own. Freyja and I genuinely loved them!
