Our house has the pox. Well, chickenpox to be precise. Over the half term break both the girls had had coughs and colds but I had put it down to the seemingly unending stream of colds at this time of the year. Freyja did also have one day where she had a bit more of a temperature and was a bit under the weather, so I treated her with Calpol and sympathy (actually I think I told her to “man-up”). However, on Tuesday a couple of spots appeared on her body. It COULDN’T be chickenpox though as we hadn’t been in contact with anyone with it and she had been off nursery for half term.
Turns out there was an outbreak of chickenpox at nursery. By Thursday morning she was covered. But at least she was happy in herself. By Friday there were more spots and she was feeling “itchy”. She was getting miserable with the itchiness, and asked me to “make it better mummy”. Heartbreaking. I wished I could magic them all away. Thankfully, we have had very little in the way of illness with Freyja and touch wood that things don’t change. As a result of this, this has been the first occasion where I have felt very helpless – the power of “mummy cuddles” can only do so much.
I had been covering her with calomine lotion but she really didn’t like it. So I read up on a few more ideas for relieving the itchiness. So far I have tried washing her down in the bath with a sock filled with porridge and bathing her in bicarbonate of soda (well, baking powder as that was all I had). The treatment that seems to have worked best is Emily’s baby butter. However, Rich bought some Piriton which specifically says on the box that it can help “relieve the itchiness from chickenpox”. It also “may cause drowsiness”. I think Freyja will be getting a dose at bedtime. I wouldn’t want those nasty spots causing her any discomfort tonight…..
