Monkey Goes to the Dentist
Who honestly likes going to the dentist? Not many of you I bet. It can be a daunting experience for children – strange smells and scary looking instruments could put children right off dental check-ups. It can be hard to know what to say to prepare and reassure children for a first trip to the dentist, especially if you dislike going yourself. Thankfully, a lovely lady called Helen Sadler came up with the Monkey Wellbeing series which is a range of different resources to help prepare children (and their parents) for new experiences such as having to have an operation. We really loved Monkey’s Guide to Starting School so we were more than happy to have a look at Monkey Goes to the Dentist.
Just like Monkey’s Guide to Starting School, Monkey Goes to the Dentist comes with a storybook, activity book, pencils and stickers. There is also a reward chart and teeth cleaning pack with toothbrush, timer and disclosing tablets.
The books are pitched just right for pre-school aged children and above. The story follows Monkey’s first trip to the dentist with his family, the people he meets, having a ride in the dentist’s chair and some of the dental instruments. The books explain why these different instruments are needed and how to keep teeth healthy. Freyja enjoyed reading the story and working through the activities. She loved being rewarded with stickers for completing the activities and it gave us lots to talk about.
Freyja has never really had much of an issue with going to the dentist but I still found this pack really useful. Emily is a totally different story – she can’t even be persuaded to sit in the special chair! I will definitely be using this with her before our next trip!
