Making a Fairy Door
Fairy doors seem to be popping up all over the place – like there has been a fairy population explosion in Mythical Creature Valley and hundreds of tiny folk have been setting up home in human homes and wooded areas in popular tourist attractions. I think it is a really cute idea, and a great way to help stimulate a child’s imagination. You can buy some really beautiful fairy doors, but I have also discovered that The Irish Fairy Door Company produce a “Paint Your Own Fairy Door” kit. Not only can your child have their own fairy door (although I would question as to whether it is actually the fairy who owns the door or the adult who actually owns the house) but they can also decorate it however they wish and make it much more personal.
The Paint Your Own Fairy Door comes with the door itself and paints, paintbrush and embellishments to decorate the door. In addition to this, there is also a magic key in a bottle, three stepping stones, the Family/Fairy Lease Agreement, a notepad and pens for your child and the fairy to communicate with each other and the Fairy Welcome Guide.
Freyja loved the idea of painting her own fairy door, and decided to make it as bright and colourful as she could. Apart from peeling the backing off and placing some of the smaller embellishments, she decorated the door herself.
You can register your fairy’s name on The Fairy Workplace Log on the Irish Fairy Door website, so your child can enjoy exclusive stories and play ideas delivered direct from Fairy Valley on a weekly basis. Once the door is finished it can be placed inside or outside – although if it is going to be placed outside, it is recommended that it is painted twice a year with exterior varnish in order to maintain it. One the door has been decorated, your child signs the lease and leaves this and the magical key outside the door, ready for a fairy to move in. When the fairy moves in, they will also sign the lease and pick up their key!
This is such a lovely idea for any child who believes in and loves the idea of sharing their home with a fairy. Little touches like the magical key and lease agreement make the kit a bit more special, and the ability for your child to decorate the door itself does mean they can create something unique. The Paint Your Own Fairy Door kit costs £24.99 and is suitable for children aged three and upwards. It is a lovely kit, and well worth getting for any child who believes in the magic of fairies.
