Cool Maker – KumiKreator Friendship Bracelet Maker
With the six weeks summer holiday to fill, I am always looking for activities to do with the girls. Both of them enjoy doing crafts, so I was really excited to see what they made of the Cool Maker – KumiKreator Friendship Bracelet Maker from Spin Master. The KumiKreator allows you to make Kumi friendship bracelets based on Japanese “Kumihimo” meaning “gathered threads”.
In addition to the Cool Maker KumiKreator, the kit includes 88 spools of different coloured thread, clasps, end caps, clasp stickers, measuring guide and design booklet, allowing you to make up to 10 unique friendship bracelets, with either 8 strands or 12 strands.
To start off, you need to select a bracelet pattern from the design booklet (or create your own pattern) and load up the spools into the machine. You then turn the handle of the machine, making the spools move around each other, weaving together the bracelet.
The Cool Maker KumiKreator is aimed at children aged 8 and up. Freyja is 7, and found loading the spools into the machine and getting the threads positioned a bit too tricky. Therefore, I ended up doing this for each bracelet made. However, the braiding part was very easy to do – even Emily managed to weave together her own bracelet! What is really great about this kit is that the bracelet can be produced really quickly.
We were all really impressed with the outcomes too. We tried 8 stranded and 12 stranded bracelets. There is no way we would have been able to produce anything this intricate without the KumiKreator kit. It is a really clever little piece of kit – and watching the spools dance around in the machine as the threads are braided together is quite mesmerizing!
The girls have really enjoyed this kit and are planning on making lots more to give to their friends when they return to school in September.
