Clownfish Sewing Kit
I was dreading the 6 weeks holiday with how I was going to keep the girls entertained, especially if the weather wasn’t so good. So I bought lots of bits and pieces from Hobbycraft for plenty of things to keep us busy. I thought I would share a few of the things we have been doing with you and maybe inspire you. Freyja has been very excited about doing “crafts” (or “crapts” as she (maybe more appropriately) calls them, and although these are not works of art, my lovely little 3 year old is very proud of her work.
One of the first things we had a go at was the Felt Clownfish Sewing Kit by Hobbycraft. ( http://www.hobbycraft.co.uk/hobbycraft-felt-clownfish-sewing-kit-orange/587833-1000) With Freyja being a big Nemo fan, I couldn’t resist getting this for her. It was only £2 and came with the pre-cut felt clownfish shape, plastic needle, thread, pipe cleaners, ribbon tie and stuffing. The clownfish shape felts also had sewing guide holes. The first part – sewing together the two pieces to make up the body to stuff – took us 3 sittings to get this done. This was mainly because Freyja kept getting a bit bored with sewing and seeing very little progress initially. At first I sat her on my lap and guided her hand as she pushed the needle through the pre-punched holes and as she gained confidence, she was able to do this herself (although got frustrated when she pulled the needle too far and the thread kept parting company with the needle!).
The body of our felt clownfish all stitched and stuffed, ready to decorate.
Once the body had been stitched and stuffed, Freyja started on the bit she had most looked forward to – decorating! We positioned the eye and fins first and then stuck on pieces of white felt and black pipe cleaners on after to form stripes. I helped Freyja put the glue on each bit (mainly because I had visions of the clownfish becoming a permanent fixture on the dining room table if I didn’t) but she positioned them where she wanted to.
The finished clownfish!
I used a piece of thread to attach a loop to the finished fish, and it is now hanging up proudly in her room! I was really pleased with the kit. It was great value and made for a really good introduction to sewing for Freyja. Hobbycraft do a few other similar kits, and I will definitely be buying another of these in the very near future!
