Now, I have to admit that I was a bit sceptical about this Bellz! game from Spinmaster that we were sent to review. It all seemed very simplistic – pick up the bells with a magnet. I wasn’t convinced that Freyja would be particularly impressed. I have to say, I was totally proven wrong. Bellz! is a simple game to play, but it requires skill and strategy and we both found it challenging and fun!
Bellz! comes with a magnet wand, forty bells in four different colours and three different sizes and a travel pouch which opens up and acts as the game arena. Bellz! can be played by 2 to 4 people and is suitable for ages 6 and upwards.
The idea is that players use the magnet want to pick up bells of just one colour. Each end of the magnet wand has a different strength. You decide how many bells you want to pick up during your turn, but you must do this without picking up any other colour. The first player to collect all ten bells of one colour is the winner. The skill comes from trying to pick up as many bells of only one colour, and using the best end of the magnet wand to do so.
I was surprised by just how engaged Freyja was with the game. I think kids love anything that involves a magnet. As the game is very straightforward to play, she understood the rules very quickly. As I have quickly come to realise, Freyja is very competitive when it comes to board games. And as Freyja has come to realise, I won’t just “let her win”. It was great fun watching her trying to work out which of the bells to pick up and how many she could get away with going for without picking up any of a different colour.
The whole game zips up into the pouch which means that it actually takes up very little space (always a winner in a house full of toys) and it can be taken away with you.
