An update on my Personal Training – 4 sessions on
A couple of weeks ago I wrote about how I have started some Personal Training with Hall Personal Training. I wanted to thank everyone who has sent me words of encouragement. It is amazing just how powerful a few positive words can make when it comes to keeping you motivated. When you decide to do something about your health, only you can make that decision. Once you have done that, the support of others really helps keep you on track. I think after four personal training sessions, it’s time to give you an update on how things are going.
The Training Sessions
My Personal Trainer, Elliot, has put together two different training sessions for me. The two sessions are done alternatively once a week. After I have completed both sessions, I do really feel like I have worked every single muscle in my body. My first two sessions were really focussed on understanding the technique used for each exercise. I am so glad I have Elliot’s expertise to help me. If I were doing these exercises in a gym, I KNOW I wouldn’t be doing them correctly. Elliot is constantly checking how I move – making sure I am doing each exercise correctly so I minimise the chance of any injury and get the most out of the training. He also counts my reps so I don’t get away with doing too few!
Although Elliot’s expertise is invaluable, I think what I appreciate most from training with him is how he gets the balance of pushing me through the exercise and praising me spot on. I have come to realise that I don’t get much praise in my every day life. When I have worked really hard lifting more weight than I ever have done, improving my technique or going flat out on a Watt Bike, then a bit of praise makes it feel worth the effort. It makes me want to do more, and to do it better.
My Fitness Pal
I was quite sceptical about using My Fitness Pal. I have always hated the idea of calorie counting. However, I was pleasantly surprised how easy it is to use. Pretty much everything I have eaten – from fresh vegetables to supermarket prepared food has been listed on the app. It is quick and simple to add these foods into the diary, and from here, get information on the calories and nutritional content of everything I eat. Of course, you have to be completely honest with yourself, but it has got me thinking about what I am eating and what I could be doing differently.
Having analysed my diet, Elliot has set me a few targets with regards to what I am eating. The biggest of these is to increase my protein and decrease my carbohydrate intake. I was surprised to see I was eating far less protein than I thought I was. The biggest change I have made is eating an egg based breakfast every day. I have discovered Two Chicks Egg Whites so I have been making omelettes using a combination of whole eggs and egg whites to reduce the fat content. Protein helps you feel fuller for longer, so I have been less tempted to snack before lunch too!
My Weight and Fitness
Four sessions in, I am feeling fitter. A brisk walk on the school run when I realise that I am running late, doesn’t get me out of breath. Every time I go to the gym the weights seem easier (until Elliot then puts the weight or reps up). I am actually wanting to stay on track with what I am eating, rather than feeling resentful that I am missing out on treats. It would not be uncommon for me to have a drink every evening, but I have at least halved the amount that I am drinking. I have lost around 2 to 3 kilos since I have started. This may not seem too much, but during this time I have celebrated my birthday which did involve cake, gin and a take away.
So that’s where I am a third of a way through my sessions with Hall Personal Training. I am pleased with how my training is going and feeling motivated enough to want to carry on with it.
