An afternoon on Porthmeor Beach
We are lucky enough to have family down in beautiful St Ives, Cornwall. As lovely as it is seeing them – especially watching the four cousins playing together – the bonus really is being so close to the seaside. We spent the last bank holiday down with the family in St Ives, and had the most glorious weather. There was only one thing to do, spend it on the beach!
St Ives has some of the nicest sandy beaches in the country. On a sunny day there is nothing more gorgeous than the contrasting blues of the sea and sky next to the golden sand. It really is idyllic. We spent one afternoon on Porthmeor Beach. The beach was busy but there was still plenty of spaces, and when we found a suitable spot, Freyja and Emily and their younger cousin, Rose, busied themselves with buckets and went about on the important business of fetching up water from the sea.
Soon they were running back up the beach with their buckets and pouring the water into freshly dug holes, only to find the water quickly disappeared.
Freyja and Rose soon tired of fetching water up from the sea and opted to play by some rocks where there was a trickle of water running down them and onto the beach.
Emily, on the other hand, wanted to stay down by the sea and paddle. She didn’t care about the chill of the water on her skin and let out a squeal every time a wave lapped against her feet. It was a joy to watch how much fun she was having, just through watching and feeling the action of the waves.
I think it’s the fact that we live so far away from the beach that the girls seem to love it so much. To spend time paddling in the sea, or playing on a sandy beach is something that is a treat, and as a result they seem to make the most of these precious moments.
Of course, it’s not just the small people in my family who enjoy playing on the beach. The big kid, aka my husband, cannot resist the lure of a bucket, a spade and a nice spot on a sandy beach.
For me, the time spent on the beach can now be fairly relaxing. I can sit back on the soft sand, enjoying the warmth of the sun whilst the other three are being kept busy. I think it is moments like these that I will cherish most. The girls fully immersed in something so simple as playing outside, with what the natural environment has to offer. Enjoying the fresh sea air and sunshine.
