A Family Meal at The Bottle of Sauce
Sometimes when you have children, it is easier to stick to the tried and tested. However, I like to try new places. I like to be able to go to the places that I want to eat at, not somewhere where I know the girls will be happy. I think we have a new place to go that will please everyone – The Bottle of Sauce. This pub in Cheltenham opened at the end of 2017 and has become well known for its burgers and pizzas. At the start of this month it launched its new children’s menu. Rich and I have eaten here before and really enjoyed the food, and with the girls also enjoying burgers and pizzas, it did seem like a safe bet.
The Bottle of Sauce is a large pub, with lots of different rooms, so you can find a cosy nook or choose a table in the canteen. You can even have a game of table tennis or table football in the Games Room.
With the weather still glorious, we opted for a table in the garden.
The Bottle of Sauce kids menu was a choice of build your own pizza or a build you own burger. The girls were supplied with coloured pencils each, so they were able to colour in their menu whilst they waited for their food. The wait wasn’t actually that long, so they were a little disappointed they didn’t have time to finish off!
Freyja chose a pizza with ham on it. She was really pleased that the ham was actually ham hock. Needless to say it was devoured pretty quickly!
Emily decided to build her own burger. This came deconstructed to the table on a tray, allowing her to decide exactly how she wanted her burger. Such a genius idea, because there is no worry that you have the individual components arranged incorrectly – so important to small children!
Sauces were also available as no burger is complete without ketchup!
Emily made short work of the burger and skin-on fries!
Rich also decided he was going to have a burger. He chose the “Dirty Bird” which was a crispy chicken burger with ‘slaw, picked cucumber, lettuce and smoky chipotle mayo. He had some sweet potato fries on the side. Now, I do love a sweet potato fry, so Rich let me try one. They were some of the best I had tasted, and if they were mine, there is no way I would be sharing them with anyone!
I was tempted by the vegetarian “Mushroom Man” burger and vegan “The Holy Guacamole” burger, however, I have had the “Mr Melanzane” pizza at The Bottle of Sauce before, and their pizzas are so good, I couldn’t resist. They are cooked in their woodfire ovens, so are a mile away from the pizzas you get in most places. This time, I tried the “Truffle Funghi” pizza. It might be my new favourite pizza. This was a white pizza with ricotta, fior de latte and parmasan cheeses, basil, portobello mushrooms, basil and truffle oil. It was so delicious.
I washed this down with a pint of their Dodo lager. The Bottle of Sauce have a great selection of beers on tap, and the knowledgable staff suggested one that I might like – and even let me try it before I committed to it.
All-in-all we were very impressed. Not a morsel of food remained on our plates at the end of the meal. This is usually the case for Rich and I, but for the girls to finish every bit of food, just shows you how good it was. They are very keen to come here again in the summer holidays, so we will be back again very soon. If you are in Cheltenham and looking for somewhere great to eat with the kids, then I can’t recommend The Bottle of Sauce enough.
